We had an amazing end to an amazing week. Our presentations on Thursday night really showed what DARTS is all about! We started out with the theater group led by Emily Beattie, taking us through the 1920's using a piece of rope. The theater group used the rope as a boxing ring to represent the first sports broadcast as well as ticker tape to show the stock market crash in 1929. From there we headed up into the dance studio and watch Annette Brown and her dancers present a well choreographed routine to "All that Jazz" from Chicago. Chicago jazz was hot in the 1920's and the dancers were able to portray it very well. From the studio we headed to the lobby/gallery to see Linda's visual artists. Jazz was the theme through her workshop as the young artists showed us works that they had been working on all week.
From there we went to the music building. Monise Reed's instrumentalists played Summertime by Gershwin and a medley from the movie Chicago. The group really worked hard to put together the concert in only 4 days, but it worked and they sounded great! Last but not least was the vocal music workshop led by Phil McCullough. Phil's singers sang songs from the 20's including "Second Hand Rose", "Manhattan", and "Together."
The night wasn't over yet. The talent show was next, everyone performed, including the CITS. We proved that everyone has a talent!
After the talent show we let loose and danced the night away! DJ Gabriel provided some sweet beats as we were able to relax and have some fun with our friends on the last night.
Friday morning we headed off to Tanglewood to watch the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra play Beethoven. We also met a musician who is going to Julliard to study flute.
After the rehearsal we played the name game, where a few of us were able to name everyone at DARTS, all 70! We also announced the clean room winners, Tirson, Jeremy, Monica and Katherine, great job.
We ate lunch at Tanglewood and then headed back to campus to collect our things and head home.
It was a terrific way for DARTS to start off the summer. The week 1 DARTIES sure lived up to the Darts reputation as a one of a kind program. We hope it was the best week of your summer and one of the best weeks of their lives.
